Embarking

I'm sitting at my gate waiting to leave Portland to begin my grand adventure. Just wanted to share a quote with you. In the Chronicles of Narnia the children ask of Asland the lion, "Is he safe?" and they were answered, "No, but he's good." Those of you who serve Jesus know that CS Lewis was talking about Him. My life isn't "safe" but Jesus makes it all good!

It's so reassuring, Jessica, to know that we don't need to worry so much about what He asks of us, because we know He is good. He sometimes takes us through the Valley of the Shadow of Death even, but His rod and staff let us know He'll get us through in His time and in His way. Perhaps for many, this is a bit of an abstract - a Theological discussion. Not so, however, for those of us who know God is asking us to face very real dangers and trials and persecution. I am not to that point just yet, but already He is preparing me and building up my trust in and dependence on Him.

No, Christ is not a tame Lion, nor does He promise us a safe life; more often the opposite, in fact. I'm so glad, though, that we can know that He is good. Knowing that means that we can leave all in His hands. I think of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walking boldly (even if tremblingly) into that huge oven. God did not prevent them from going in, but He met them there. Best, perhaps, of all, was that because their willingness to lay their very lives down for Him, He was able to accomplish His purposes through them.

Our God is an All-Consuming Fire - He is far from tame - And yet, He is Love. A paradox? Perhaps, but one I'm glad I'll have as long on this earth as He chooses to try to search out such mysteries.

"Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator."
(I Peter 4:19)
