something you didn't want to know about bats

Yeah, so today I saw a guy at the market ripping off a bat's wing with his bare teeth. The bat may or may not have still been alive. I'm pretty much scarred for life. Just thought I'd share. I hope to include one day a picture of the bats that they sell at the market. Apparently they cook them with green mangoes and eat them whole, head and all. Yeah, I'm sure you didn't want to know that, but, hey, these are the things I have to hear about all the time. Just sharing the joy.

Ick. Think rabies. I imagine they have it over there in Congo too.

Now I have been known to bite into raw dead birds before (back in my wild African days), but this made even me sick to the stomach!

Glad you're well, Jessica. You're going to learn sooo much on your upcoming trip north.

Terrill, "raw dead birds"?!!! I figured the bat post would get a lot of reactions. Taxi, remind me not to go for dinner at your place. Yeah, Eddie, my friends said they would fix it for me and not tell me what it was, but I have a feeling if they eat it whole like they say they do, that the face on the food will give it away :o)

i'm with anna.
and i didn't need to know that about terrill - how about you, ca? i'm really not begging for details here, but what is the size of these bats?

I was waiting for a response from the Good Sistah :o) (Keep in mind that she has bats living in her house and is unwilling to have them exterminated)

I would guess that their bodies are about 4 inches long and they probably have a 12 inch wing span.

About the rabies, heck I've got my rabies shots, so I'm not as worried about that. But my friend Carol said she learned in med-school that they can spread ebola! Just say no to ebola.

I was out on my balcony last night bringing in my laundry and this bat was swooping over my head. I came in quickly. I see them all the time, but I've never heard of anyone getting bit.

So Jessica. (And I know this will gross everyone else out, but I guess you just have to know me.) Haven't I told you before that one of my goals in life is to eat a bat? So, this really really excites me. I thought I'd have to make a special trip to the Amazon just to fulfill this culinary desire. Just one more reason to get my butt to Congo...
